Political Regimes and External Voting Rights: A Cross-National Comparison

In this article, we analyze the nexus between political regimes and external voting rights. Using a global longitudinal dataset, report that higher levels of inclusion contestation bring probabilities state adopts implements emigrant enfranchisement. Taking outliers from our quantitative assessment, then further examine two liberal democracies, Ireland Uruguay, electoral autocracies, Turkey Venezuela. These country cases reveal three mechanisms shed light on strategic role elites in explaining relation regime type First, democracies under study show us certain contexts with relatively large diaspora size which part spectrum is hesitant about orientation nonresident citizens, enfranchisement neither necessarily promulgated nor implemented. Second, autocracies illustrate when favors (or perceived to favor) incumbency, rights are extended; otherwise, third, they withheld or limited for citizens.
